53.Ranking of articles published in JAMA 2016

(31 March 2017)

At the end of the year, the Journal of the American Medical Association published a ranking of the most widely talked articles in 2016 published in its pages.

The winner is the article “United States Healthcare Reform: progress to date and next steps”.

The article drew attention in 8262 cases. Who was interested in this article?

Members of the public – 72%

Scientist – 12%

Practitioners ( doctors and other healthcare professionals)  – 8%

Science communicators – 4%

The second place took the article “The association between income and life expectancy in the United States, 2001 – 2014”

Very, very interesting article!

Do you know that the gap in life expectancy between the richest 1% and poorest 1% of individuals was 14.6 years for men and 10.1 years for women! I knew it was worth it to be rich, but I did not know that money would lengthen life so much!

The article drew attention in 3832 cases. Who was interested in this article?

Members of the public – 65%

Scientist – 16%

Practitioners ( doctors and other healthcare professionals)  – 16%

Science communicators – 3%

Notice that twice as many health care workers were concerned about the topic of longevity rather than reform. The rich man will survive any reform of the health care system?

The third-place took the article “Effect of wearable technology combined with lifestyle intervention on long-term weight loss: The IDEA randomized clinical trial ”

The article drew attention in 3497 cases. Who was interested in this article?

Members of the public – 59%

Scientist – 20%

Practitioners ( doctors and other healthcare professionals)  – 18%

Science communicators – 3%

Most readers lived in the United States. The most popular news channel on the issues described in the scientific articles was Twitter!

Did the oldest scientists expect that their science articles’ contemporary world will only tweet but not debate?

Most popular among practitioners (22%) and read in the largest number of countries was an article with the fourth place “The third international consensus definitions for sepsis and septic shock (Sepsis-3)”
